소개 ㅣ한글은 점, 선, 원이라는 가장 단순하고 본질적인 조형 요소로 세계를 담아내는 문자이다. 박선영 작가는 한글이 지닌 독창적인 조형미와 구조적 가능성에 주목하며, 이를 문자 추상이라는 현대적 조형 언어로 재해석한다.

이번 전시에서 작가는 피트 몬드리안의 그리드(Grid) 연구에서 얻은 영감을 바탕으로 한글의 초성,중성,종성을 해체하고 재조합한다. 훈민정음의 창제 원리인 가획과 천, 지, 인( •, ㅡ, ㅣ)의 서사를 따라 선은 점으로 대체되고, 획은 해체되어 새로운 조형적 공간을 창출한다. 전통적인 문자 예술인 캘리그라피를 현대 미술의 추상적 맥락으로 확장해 내는 작가의 조형적 탐구는 새로운 미학적 지평을 제시한다.

해체된 문자 사이로 피어나는 꽃과 화면을 채우는 다채로운 색채는 위로와 감사, 그리고 긍정의 메시지를 전달하는 매개체이다. 수식 없는 추상적 선과 면으로 구성된 작품들은 관객에게 소망과 평안의 울림을 건넨다. 박선영 작가의 작품 세계 속에서, 문자가 예술이 되는 순간의 아름다움과 그 안에 담긴 따뜻한 울림을 경험하시길 바란다.

작가노트

우리나라의 문자인 ‘한글’만이 그려낼 수 있는 독창적인 조형미를 표현하는 것에서 작업의 즐거움과 뿌듯함을 느끼며, 세계에서 유일무이한 문자인 우리의 ‘한글’을 더욱 사랑하게 되었다.

‘한글 문자추상화’ 작업은 피트 몬드리안의 작품에서 많은 영감을 받았으며, 네모난 틀 안에서 가로획과 세로획이 만나는 한글만의 독특한 구조에서 검정색 그리드(Grid)를 기본 뼈대로 구성하고, 자음과 모음의 해체 및 재조합을 통해 선과 면이 변형되고 확장되는 추상화의 과정에서 한글만의 고유한 조형미와 공간미를 표현하고 있다. 

작품 속 검정색의 그리드(Grid)에는 사랑, 은혜, 꽃은 기쁨과 행복을 느낄 수 있다. 재료와 도구 등 다양한 시도와 발견을 통해 점층적으로 확장되는 나만의 캘리그라피의 세계를 만들어 가고자 하며, 사랑, 소망, 평안의 긍정적인 메시지를 담고자 한다.

Hangeul is a script that captures the world using the most essential and fundamental formal elements: the dot, the line, and the circle. Focusing on the unique aesthetic form and structural possibilities of Hangeul, artist Park Sun-young reinterprets the script into a contemporary visual language of "calligraphic abstraction."

In this exhibition, inspired by Piet Mondrian’s grid studies, the artist deconstructs and recombines the initial, medial, and final consonants and vowels of Hangeul. Guided by the foundational principles of Hunminjeongeum—including stroke addition and the cosmic symbolism of Heaven ( • ), Earth ( ㅡ ), and Humanity ( l )—lines are replaced by dots, and strokes are dismantled to create new compositional spaces. Expanding traditional calligraphy into the context of contemporary abstract art, Park’s formal exploration presents a fresh aesthetic horizon.

The blossoms emerging between deconstructed letterforms and the vibrant hues filling the canvas serve as mediums conveying comfort, gratitude, and positivity. Composed of unadorned abstract lines and planes, these works offer viewers a resonant sense of hope and peace. We invite you to experience the beauty of language turning into art and the warm resonance held within the artistic world of Park Sun-young.

Artist Statement

Expressing the unique aesthetic beauty that only our native script, Hangeul, can bring to life brings me profound joy and fulfillment in my practice. This process has deepened my love for Hangeul, a truly one-of-a-kind writing system in the world.

My work in "Hangeul Calligraphic Abstraction" draws significant inspiration from the art of Piet Mondrian. Starting from the unique structure of Hangeul—where horizontal and vertical strokes meet within a square frame—I establish a black grid as the fundamental framework. Through the deconstruction and recombination of consonants and vowels, lines and planes transform and expand, voicing the inherent spatial and structural aesthetics of Hangeul.

Within my paintings, the black grid conveys love and grace, while the floral elements evoke feelings of joy and happiness. Through continuous experimentation with diverse tools and mediums, I seek to gradually expand my own calligraphic realm, filling each piece with positive messages of love, hope, and peace.
